” Your lifestyle plays an important role in your health.”

We all know the meaning of lifestyle, it is the way in which we live our life. Today, most of us are aware of the negative consequences of unhealthy lifestyle however we follow it!

How are we leading an unhealthy living pattern? Ask yourself the following questions and the more your answer says ‘NO’ the lesser healthy lifestyle you’re living!

Do you eat homemade traditional food at least 5 days a week?

Do you eat 4-5 times a day?

Do you go for walking or jogging at least thrice a week?

Do you drink at least 8 glasses of water?

Millions of individuals would answer No to most of the questions mentioned here. Today, due to the obvious reasons, we do not consume healthy foods,we lead a sedentary lifestyle, there is no routine of physical activity, we are mostly stressed which affects our sleep. Therefore, we all are leading an unhealthy lifestyle.

Below, I have listed a few common unhealthy lifestyle habits followed by most of the individuals.

1.Diet– Today we are highly dependent on fast food outlets, restaurants and home deliveries. We do not like consuming food at home or made at home! Social events and gatherings have made the problem even worse as the food served is mostly high in fat, sugar and salt, rich in calories yet offer little or no nutritional value.

When fast food frequently replaces nutritious foods in your diet, it can lead to poor nutrition, poor health, and weight gain.

Consuming junk food frequently leads to overweight and obesity.Being overweight is a risk factor for a variety of chronic health problems including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.Obesity increases the likelihood of various diseases, particularly heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.

Eating too much to fulfill the cravings or eating too less to maintain that waist size, both are unhealthy! Thus, it is very important to consume a well-balanced diet- a diet consisting of the proper quantities and proportions of foods needed to maintain health.

2.Sedentary lifestyle or physical inactivity another common bad habit that leads to ill health.According to the WHO, about 2 million people worldwide die from conditions related to physical inactivity.

What are the major health risks of physical inactivity?

  • Increased chances of developing hypertension.
  • Increased risk of developing heart diseases.
  • Osteoporosis is likely to happen.
  • Doubles the risk of obesity.
  • Type 2 Diabetes is more likely to develop.
  • Higher chances of developing depression and anxiety.
  • Increased risk of developing certain types of cancers.
  • High blood cholesterol.

Therefore, adults aged 18–64 should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity.

3.Sleep- One of the bases of healthy life is the sleep.Lifestyle may effect on sleep and sleep has a clear influence on mental and physical health. For an adult, 8 hours of sound sleep is essential for good health.
4.Stress- We all experience it due to various reasons and try to cope up with it.

Stress gives rise to many health problems (some of them are mentioned in the picture) therefore, Stress Management is important for a healthy living. Related link: Stress Management.

5.Smartphone Addiction- Now this is the most common unhealthy habit experienced by all of us.Nowadays, it is easy to see people sitting around each other but only staring at their cell phones without any conversation, using their phones while having food, playing games or texting instead of going for a jog! This addiction has given rise to a new disorder known as ‘Nomophobia‘. Nomophobia is a proposed name for the phobia or fear of being out of mobile phone contact. For example: Fear of ‘losing your phone’s battery’, anxiety that develops when you run out of credit, or have no network coverage!  Therefore, smartphone addiction leads to anxiety when there is no phone, engages you in sedentary activities and stops you from doing routine work while you sit in one place at all times! Moreover, we tend to skip meals as we’re so busy ‘working’. Hence, to live a healthy lifestyle one must know how to beat this addiction! Related link: 5 Ways to Beat Your Phone Addiction

6.Substance abuse- Addiction is considered as an unhealthy way of living.Alcoholism, smoking and using other such substances result in various serious health problems such as :-

  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Coronary Heart Diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Hypertension
  • Stroke
  • Cancer
  • Hepatitis B and C
  • Lung disease
  • Mental disorder

Thus, one must eliminate or cut down on the intake of these substances or follow safe alcohol consumption tips if it is totally unlikely to eliminate it. (I would write about cutting down on alcohol and safe alcohol consumption tips in detail in my next blog.)

Living a healthy lifestyle can be a challenge when you are faced with processed foods, lack of time for exercise and going out with friends. Too many options are available for fast food, poor exercise choices and alcoholic beverages that negate other healthier lifestyle choices you may have made. However, some simple changes made can do wonders!  Therefore, to maintain a healthy and disease free body and lead a long life, one should  follow the above information.

CONCLUSION-

  1. Eat a balanced diet,
  2. Avoid fasting or skipping meals,
  3. Exercise regularly,
  4. Engage in yoga for peace of mind and recreational activities to reduce stress,
  5. Say no to alcohol, smoking, tabacco etc,
  6. Have at least 8 hours of sound sleep.
